Vancouver Canucks’ Goalie Silovs Confident and Calm Heading into New Season
As the Vancouver Canucks gear up for the upcoming NHL season, all eyes are on their young goaltender, Arturs Silovs. The 20-year-old Latvian native has been making waves in the hockey world with his impressive skills and unwavering confidence.
Silovs, who was drafted by the Canucks in the sixth round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, has been turning heads during training camp with his calm demeanor and strong performance on the ice. Despite his young age and limited experience in the professional league, Silovs has shown a level of maturity and composure that is rare for a rookie.
“I’m feeling really confident and calm heading into this new season,” Silovs said in an interview with CTV News. “I’ve been working hard during the off-season and I’m ready to give my best for the team.”
Silovs’ confidence is not unfounded. In his first season with the Canucks’ AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets, he posted a 2.17 goals against average and a .915 save percentage in 12 games. He also represented Latvia at the 2021 IIHF World Championship, where he recorded a .922 save percentage in four games.
But it’s not just his on-ice performance that has caught the attention of his teammates and coaches. Silovs’ calm and collected attitude has also been praised by his fellow players.
“He’s a very calm guy, very composed,” said Canucks’ defenseman Quinn Hughes. “He’s got a lot of confidence in himself and that’s what you want to see in a goalie.”
Canucks’ head coach Travis Green also spoke highly of Silovs, saying, “He’s a very mature young man. He’s got a good head on his shoulders and he’s got a lot of confidence in his game.”
Silovs’ confidence and calmness will be put to the test as he competes for a spot on the Canucks’ roster for the upcoming season. With veteran goaltender Braden Holtby and rising star Thatcher Demko also vying for playing time, Silovs knows he will have to continue to work hard and prove himself.
