Hurricanes overcome absence of 4 regulars to defeat Oil Kings 3-1 in season opening victory

The Lethbridge Hurricanes kicked off their season with a strong 3-1 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings, despite the absence of four regular players.

The Hurricanes were missing forwards Logan Barlage, Zack Stringer, and Justin Hall, as well as defenseman Alex Cotton, who were all representing their respective countries at the World Junior Championship. However, the team did not let their absence hinder their performance.

The game started off with a quick goal from Hurricanes’ forward Dino Kambeitz, just 1:22 into the first period. The Oil Kings responded with a goal from forward Jalen Luypen, tying the game at 1-1.

But the Hurricanes were determined to secure the win, and forward Chase Wheatcroft scored the go-ahead goal in the second period. The team’s defense also stepped up, with goaltender Carl Tetachuk making 27 saves throughout the game.

In the third period, Hurricanes’ captain Alex Thacker sealed the victory with an empty-net goal, securing the team’s first win of the season.

Despite the challenges of missing key players, the Hurricanes showed resilience and determination, proving that they are a force to be reckoned with in the Western Hockey League.

Head coach Brent Kisio praised the team’s effort, stating, “We had a lot of guys step up tonight and play big roles. It’s a great start to the season and we’re excited to see what this team can do.”

The Hurricanes will continue their season with a home game against the Red Deer Rebels on Friday, January 8th. With their strong start, the team is looking to build momentum and continue their winning streak.
