A man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash that tragically took the life of a teenager from Vancouver Island.
According to police, the incident occurred on December 20, 2020, when 18-year-old Sarah MacDermott was struck by a vehicle while walking on the shoulder of Highway 19A in Parksville. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, leaving MacDermott with life-threatening injuries. She was rushed to hospital but sadly succumbed to her injuries.
After an extensive investigation, the suspect was identified as 28-year-old Michael Friesen from Parksville. He has now been charged with failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death, as well as dangerous driving causing death.
Friesen appeared in court on January 12, 2021, and has been released on bail with several conditions, including a curfew and a ban on driving. His next court appearance is scheduled for February 9.
