Residents of Plateau-Mont-Royal were forced to evacuate their homes on Monday night after a fire broke out in the area.
According to officials, the fire started in a residential building on St-Denis Street near Rachel Street. The Montreal Fire Department received a call about the fire at around 9:30 p.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters found heavy smoke and flames coming from the building. They quickly worked to evacuate the residents and contain the fire.
In total, 20 people were evacuated from the building and surrounding homes as a precaution. No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials believe it may have started in the building’s electrical system.
The Red Cross was on site to assist the displaced residents and provide them with temporary shelter.
The fire was eventually brought under control, but not before causing significant damage to the building. The extent of the damage is still being assessed.
St-Denis Street was closed between Rachel and Marie-Anne streets as firefighters worked to extinguish the fire.
Residents were allowed to return to their homes once the fire was completely extinguished and deemed safe by officials.
The Montreal Fire Department is reminding residents to regularly check their smoke detectors and have a fire escape plan in place in case of emergencies.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and the bravery of our firefighters who risk their lives to protect our community.
