Site of former Buddhist monastery in southern B.C. listed for $3M

A piece of land in southern British Columbia, once home to a Buddhist monastery, has been put up for sale with a price tag of $3 million.

The 11-acre property, located in the town of Sooke, was previously owned by the Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Association. The association had plans to build a monastery on the site, but those plans fell through and the property has been vacant for several years.

The listing for the property describes it as a “tranquil and serene oasis” with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and ocean. It also includes a main building with a meditation hall, kitchen, and living quarters, as well as several smaller buildings and a garden.

According to the real estate agent handling the sale, the property has already generated a lot of interest from potential buyers. He believes that the unique history and peaceful atmosphere of the site make it a desirable location for a variety of purposes, such as a retreat center, wellness facility, or private residence.

The Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Association, which is based in Taiwan, purchased the property in 2008 for $1.5 million. However, due to financial difficulties, they were unable to move forward with their plans for the monastery and decided to sell the land.

The association’s president, Venerable Guo Dong, expressed his hope that the new owner will continue to honor the spiritual significance of the land and use it for a purpose that benefits the community.

The sale of the former Buddhist monastery site is a reminder of the changing landscape of British Columbia, as well as the enduring appeal of the region’s natural beauty. It remains to be seen what the future holds for this tranquil piece of land, but one thing is certain: it will continue to hold a special place in the hearts of those who have been touched by its peaceful energy.
