Firefighters, air tankers tackle wildfire near Okanagan Falls

Firefighters and air tankers were deployed to battle a wildfire that broke out in Okanagan Falls on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, the blaze was first reported around 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Highway 97 and McLean Creek Road.

The fire quickly grew in size, prompting the deployment of 20 firefighters and three air tankers to the scene.

As of Wednesday morning, the fire had grown to approximately 20 hectares in size and was classified as out of control.

The BC Wildfire Service stated that the fire was burning in steep terrain, making it difficult for crews to access and contain.

Residents in the area were advised to be prepared for possible evacuation orders, although none had been issued as of Wednesday morning.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The BC Wildfire Service is reminding the public to exercise caution and follow all fire safety regulations, as the province is currently experiencing hot and dry conditions.

As of Wednesday morning, there were 14 active wildfires burning in the province, with the majority of them located in the southern interior region.

The BC Wildfire Service is urging anyone who spots a wildfire to immediately call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on a cell phone.
