Police search for man accused of assaulting Toronto cop at Saturday's protest

Toronto Police are on the hunt for a man who allegedly assaulted a police officer during a protest on Saturday.

According to authorities, the incident occurred during a demonstration against COVID-19 restrictions in the city’s downtown core. The suspect, who has not been identified, is accused of physically attacking a police officer who was attempting to maintain order at the protest.

The officer sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. The suspect fled the area before police could apprehend him.

In a statement released on Sunday, Toronto Police Chief James Ramer condemned the assault, stating that “violence against our officers will not be tolerated.” He also urged anyone with information on the suspect’s identity to come forward and assist with the investigation.

The incident has sparked outrage among law enforcement officials and community leaders, who have called for the perpetrator to be brought to justice. Many have also expressed concern over the increasing hostility towards police officers during protests and demonstrations.

This is not the first time that police have been targeted during protests in Toronto. In November, a similar incident occurred when a man allegedly threw a rock at a police officer during an anti-lockdown demonstration.

As the search for the suspect continues, authorities are reminding the public to remain peaceful and respectful during protests and to refrain from any acts of violence towards law enforcement.

Anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts is urged to contact Toronto Police or Crime Stoppers anonymously.
