Cochrane RCMP officer shoots suspect following attempted traffic stop

A Cochrane RCMP officer was forced to use their firearm during an attempted traffic stop on Saturday evening.

According to the RCMP, the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. when the officer attempted to pull over a vehicle in the area of Highway 1A and Highway 22. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and a pursuit ensued.

During the pursuit, the driver of the vehicle allegedly rammed into the police cruiser, causing significant damage. The officer then discharged their firearm, striking the suspect.

The suspect was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is currently in police custody. The officer involved in the incident was not injured.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate the use of force by the officer. The Cochrane RCMP will continue to investigate the initial attempted traffic stop and the actions of the suspect.

The RCMP has not released any information about the identity of the suspect or the officer involved in the incident.

The incident caused a temporary closure of Highway 1A and Highway 22, but both roads have since been reopened.
