Driver airlifted to hospital after car and train collide in Caledon

A driver was airlifted to the hospital after a car and train collided in Caledon on Monday evening.

According to the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the incident occurred at the intersection of Highway 10 and Charleston Sideroad around 6:30 p.m.

The driver, who has not been identified, was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was transported to a trauma centre with serious injuries.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but OPP say that the train was travelling at a low speed at the time of the incident.

The intersection was closed for several hours as police conducted their investigation, but has since reopened.

This is not the first time a collision has occurred at this intersection. In 2019, a similar incident took place, resulting in the death of a 24-year-old man.

Residents in the area have expressed concerns about the safety of the intersection, with some calling for increased safety measures such as traffic lights or a lowered speed limit.

The OPP is reminding drivers to always be cautious when approaching railway crossings and to obey all traffic signals and signs.

Anyone with information about the collision is asked to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
