Hundreds of individuals gathered in Northwest Calgary on Saturday to participate in the annual Bum Run, a charity event aimed at raising funds for colon cancer research.
The event, which was organized by the Bum Run Foundation, saw participants of all ages and fitness levels come together to run or walk a 5-kilometer route through the community. Many participants also chose to dress up in creative costumes, adding a fun and lighthearted element to the event.
According to the Bum Run Foundation, the event has raised over $1 million since its inception in 2012. This year, all proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society to support their efforts in colon cancer research and awareness.
Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Canada, with an estimated 26,800 new cases and 9,400 deaths in 2020 alone. The Bum Run aims to not only raise funds for research, but also to educate the public about the importance of early detection and prevention.
Participants and organizers alike expressed their enthusiasm and gratitude for the event, highlighting the sense of community and support that the Bum Run brings.
“It’s amazing to see so many people come together for such an important cause,” said participant Sarah Johnson. “It’s a great way to raise awareness and show support for those affected by colon cancer.”
The Bum Run also featured a post-run celebration, with live music, food trucks, and a silent auction. Local businesses and sponsors also contributed to the event, further showcasing the community’s dedication to the cause.
The Bum Run Foundation hopes to continue growing the event and raising even more funds and awareness in the years to come. With the support of the community, they believe that one day, colon cancer will be a thing of the past.
In the meantime, the Bum Run serves as a reminder to stay vigilant about our health and to support those who are fighting against this disease. As one participant put it, “We may be running for our bums, but we’re also running for a brighter future.”
