Two women have been seriously injured in a fire that broke out at an apartment building in Etobicoke on Monday evening.
According to Toronto Fire Services, the fire started on the sixth floor of the building located at 2 Eva Road, near Highway 427 and Dundas Street West, just before 7 p.m.
Firefighters arrived at the scene to find heavy smoke and flames coming from a unit on the sixth floor. They quickly worked to evacuate the building and contain the fire.
Two women were found inside the unit where the fire originated. They were both transported to a trauma centre with serious injuries. The extent of their injuries is currently unknown.
The fire was eventually brought under control and residents were allowed back into the building. However, the sixth floor remains closed off as the investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
Toronto Fire Services has confirmed that there were working smoke alarms in the building and they were activated during the fire. This allowed for a quick response and ensured the safety of the residents.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the estimated damage is currently unknown.
Residents of the building have been advised to stay in their units unless instructed otherwise by emergency personnel.
The Red Cross has been called in to assist any residents who may have been displaced by the fire.
This incident serves as a reminder for all residents to ensure they have working smoke alarms in their homes and to have an evacuation plan in case of a fire.
