Squamish bear attack was 'defensive in nature': BCCOS

A recent bear attack in Squamish, British Columbia has been determined to be defensive in nature, according to the BC Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS).

The incident occurred on April 6th, when a man was walking his dog on a trail near the Garibaldi Highlands. The man and his dog were approached by a black bear, which then proceeded to attack the dog. The man attempted to intervene and was also injured in the process.

The BCCOS conducted an investigation into the incident and determined that the bear was acting defensively to protect its cubs. The bear was not exhibiting any signs of predatory behavior and was simply trying to protect its young.

Conservation officers have since located and euthanized the bear, as it posed a potential threat to public safety. The cubs were also located and will be taken to a rehabilitation facility.

The BCCOS reminds the public to be aware of their surroundings while in bear country and to take precautions such as carrying bear spray and making noise while hiking. They also urge pet owners to keep their animals on a leash and to avoid areas known to have bear activity.

This incident serves as a reminder that bears are wild animals and should be treated with caution and respect. The BCCOS will continue to monitor bear activity in the area and take necessary actions to ensure public safety.
