Alberta murder-conspiracy trial to see cross-examination for officer who infiltrated Coutts protest

The trial for a murder conspiracy case in Alberta has come to a close on June 13th, with the verdict still pending.

The case revolves around the death of 26-year-old Ryan Lane, who was found dead in a rural area near Coutts, Alberta in April 2019. Three individuals, including Lane’s ex-girlfriend Sheena Cuthill, her husband Tim Rempel, and his brother Wilhelm Rempel, have been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The prosecution has alleged that Cuthill and the Rempel brothers conspired to kill Lane due to a custody dispute over Cuthill’s children, who were fathered by Lane. The Crown’s case is based on evidence gathered from wiretapped conversations and surveillance footage.

During the trial, the court heard testimony from several witnesses, including Cuthill’s former cellmate who claimed that Cuthill had confessed to her about the murder plot. The defence, however, argued that the cellmate was unreliable and had a history of lying.

The defence also pointed out that there was no physical evidence linking the accused to the crime, and that the Crown’s case was based on circumstantial evidence.

The trial lasted for over two months and included emotional testimony from Lane’s family and friends. The jury has now been sequestered to deliberate on the evidence presented and come to a verdict.

The accused have all pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. If found guilty, they could face life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

The verdict is expected to be delivered in the coming days, and the families of both the victim and the accused are anxiously awaiting the outcome. The court has reminded the public to respect the judicial process and refrain from speculating on the verdict until it is officially announced.

This case has garnered significant attention in the province, and the outcome of the trial will have a profound impact on all those involved. We will continue to provide updates on this story as it unfolds.
