Regina, Saskatchewan – After making his debut in the Canadian Football League (CFL) on Saturday, Saskatchewan Roughriders’ receiver Ajou Ajou is feeling grateful for the opportunity.
The 20-year-old from Brooks, Alberta played his first game against the BC Lions, catching two passes for 20 yards. Despite the team’s loss, Ajou is proud of his performance and is excited for what the future holds.
“I’m just happy to get the opportunity to play and contribute to the team,” Ajou said in an interview with CTV News. “It was a great experience and I’m looking forward to improving and helping the team in any way I can.”
Ajou, who was drafted by the Roughriders in the third round of the 2021 CFL Draft, has been working hard to adjust to the professional level of football. He credits his teammates and coaches for helping him prepare for his first game.
“I’ve been learning a lot from the veterans on the team and they’ve been really supportive and helpful,” Ajou said. “My coaches have also been pushing me to be the best I can be and I’m grateful for their guidance.”
Ajou’s journey to the CFL has been a unique one. Born in South Sudan, he moved to Canada with his family at the age of six. He started playing football in high school and quickly caught the attention of scouts with his speed and athleticism.
After playing college football at Clemson University in the United States, Ajou was thrilled to be drafted by the Roughriders and is determined to make the most of his opportunity.
“I’m just grateful to be here and I’m going to keep working hard to improve and help the team win,” Ajou said. “I’m excited for what the future holds and I’m going to give it my all every time I step on the field.”
The Roughriders’ head coach, Craig Dickenson, has been impressed with Ajou’s progress and is confident in his abilities.
“Ajou has been working hard and he’s shown a lot of potential,” Dickenson said. “We’re excited to see him continue to develop and contribute to the team.”
As the Roughriders continue their season, Ajou is determined to make a positive impact and help the team reach their goals. With his hard work and determination, there’s no doubt that he will continue to make a name for himself in the CFL.
