A member of the Toronto Police’s drug squad is facing serious charges after being arrested for impaired driving and drug possession.
According to a statement from the Toronto Police Service, Constable Michael Thompson was arrested on May 29th by the York Regional Police. He has been charged with impaired driving, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a prohibited weapon.
Thompson, who has been with the Toronto Police Service for 15 years, has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the charges. The Toronto Police Service has also launched an internal investigation into the matter.
In a statement, Toronto Police Chief James Ramer expressed his disappointment and emphasized that the actions of one officer do not reflect the values and professionalism of the entire police service.
The Toronto Police Association, the union representing Toronto police officers, has also released a statement expressing their disappointment and stating that they will support Thompson through the legal process.
Thompson is scheduled to appear in court on July 6th.
This is not the first time a member of the Toronto Police’s drug squad has faced legal troubles. In 2019, Constable Richard Senior was charged with multiple counts of fraud and breach of trust. He was later found guilty and sentenced to six years in prison.
The Toronto Police Service has faced criticism in recent years for the conduct of some of its officers. In 2020, an independent review found that the Toronto Police Service has a culture of “systemic discrimination” against Black and Indigenous people.
The Toronto Police Service has stated that they are committed to addressing these issues and improving their relationship with the community.
As the legal process unfolds, the Toronto Police Service will continue to provide updates on the situation.
