City of Kelowna encourages people to GoByBike during the first week of June

The City of Kelowna is urging its residents to ditch their cars and hop on their bikes during the first week of June as part of the annual GoByBike campaign.

The initiative, which runs from June 1st to 7th, aims to promote cycling as a sustainable and healthy mode of transportation. This year’s theme is “Safe and Connected,” highlighting the importance of bike-friendly infrastructure and safe cycling practices.

Mayor Colin Basran is a strong advocate for cycling and encourages everyone to participate in the campaign. “Not only is cycling good for our physical and mental well-being, but it also reduces traffic congestion and carbon emissions,” he says.

The City has partnered with the non-profit organization, Bike to Work BC, to organize various events and activities throughout the week. These include bike maintenance workshops, group rides, and a virtual bike challenge where participants can track their cycling trips and compete for prizes.

In addition, the City is offering free bike tune-ups at select locations and has installed temporary bike lanes to make cycling safer and more accessible.

According to the City’s Active Transportation Coordinator, Matt Worona, the pandemic has highlighted the importance of alternative modes of transportation. “We’ve seen a significant increase in cycling during the past year, and we want to continue promoting it as a viable option for daily commutes,” he explains.

The City is also reminding cyclists to follow the rules of the road and wear a helmet for their safety. “We want to ensure that everyone can enjoy cycling in a safe and connected community,” says Worona.

Residents are encouraged to register for the GoByBike campaign and log their trips on the Bike to Work BC website. By participating, they not only contribute to a greener and healthier city but also have a chance to win prizes.

So, let’s all grab our bikes and join the City of Kelowna in promoting a more sustainable and active lifestyle during the first week of June. Together, we can make a positive impact on our community and the environment.
