A fire on a utility pole in Toronto’s downtown core has caused widespread power outages, leaving thousands of residents without electricity.
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, when a pole caught fire near the intersection of Bay and Dundas streets. The Toronto Fire Services were immediately called to the scene and were able to extinguish the flames within a few hours.
However, the damage had already been done. The fire caused significant damage to the pole and the surrounding electrical equipment, resulting in power outages for approximately 5,000 customers in the area.
Toronto Hydro crews were also on the scene, working diligently to restore power to affected residents. As of Wednesday morning, power had been restored to the majority of customers, with only a few remaining without electricity.
According to Toronto Hydro spokesperson, Jennifer Link, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, she did confirm that the pole was part of the city’s electrical grid and not a privately owned one.
The outage caused disruptions for businesses and residents in the downtown core, with some reporting difficulties in accessing elevators and using electronic devices. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) also experienced delays due to the power outage, with some streetcars and subways being temporarily out of service.
Fortunately, there were no reported injuries as a result of the fire. However, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining and regularly inspecting electrical infrastructure to prevent such incidents from occurring.
Toronto Hydro has assured residents that they are working diligently to fully restore power and minimize any further disruptions. They have also advised customers to report any power outages or concerns to their customer service line.
As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, residents are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during power outages. We will continue to provide updates on this developing story as more information becomes available.
