Intimate partner violence up 14 per cent in Saskatoon last year, police say

According to the Saskatoon Police Service, incidents of intimate partner violence in the city have increased by 14 per cent in the past year. This alarming statistic was revealed in the annual report released by the police department.

The report stated that there were 1,200 reported cases of intimate partner violence in Saskatoon in 2020, compared to 1,050 in 2019. This includes physical, sexual, emotional, and financial abuse between current or former intimate partners.

Saskatoon Police Chief, Troy Cooper, expressed concern over the rise in these types of crimes. He stated that the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns may have contributed to the increase, as victims were forced to spend more time with their abusers.

The report also highlighted that women continue to be the primary victims of intimate partner violence, making up 80 per cent of reported cases. However, the number of male victims has also increased by 10 per cent from the previous year.

In response to these troubling statistics, the Saskatoon Police Service has implemented various initiatives to address and prevent intimate partner violence. This includes partnering with community organizations to provide support and resources for victims, as well as conducting training for officers to better respond to these types of incidents.

Chief Cooper emphasized the importance of reporting these crimes and seeking help. He stated, “We want victims to know that they are not alone and that there is support available for them. We urge anyone experiencing intimate partner violence to reach out for help.”

The Saskatoon Police Service also encourages friends, family, and neighbors to be aware of signs of intimate partner violence and to report any concerns to the authorities.

The annual report serves as a reminder that intimate partner violence is a serious issue that continues to affect many individuals and families in our community. It is crucial for all of us to work together to prevent and address these crimes and provide support for those who are affected.
