Man shot at Surrey encampment, police say

A man has been shot at an encampment in Surrey, according to police.

The incident occurred on Wednesday evening at a homeless encampment near 135A Street and 106 Avenue. The victim, a man in his 30s, was found with gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital in serious condition.

Surrey RCMP say they received multiple reports of shots fired in the area around 7:30 p.m. Officers arrived on the scene and found the victim, who was then transported to hospital by ambulance.

The area has been cordoned off as police continue to investigate. No arrests have been made at this time and no suspect information has been released.

This is not the first time violence has occurred at this particular encampment. In January, a man was found dead at the same location and in October 2020, a man was shot and killed.

The Surrey RCMP Serious Crime Unit is leading the investigation and is asking anyone with information to come forward. They are also appealing to any witnesses who may have seen or heard anything to contact them.

The City of Surrey has been facing ongoing challenges with homelessness and encampments in recent years. In response, the city has implemented various measures, including the creation of a task force to address the issue.

This latest shooting has once again brought attention to the safety concerns surrounding these encampments and the need for a solution to be found. The victim’s condition is currently unknown and police are urging anyone with information to come forward to assist with their investigation.
