Dawgs kick off 2024 quest for WCBL title with a 7-4 victory over Lethbridge

The Okotoks Dawgs have started their journey towards the 2024 WCBL title with a strong 7-4 victory over the Lethbridge Bulls.

The game, which took place at Seaman Stadium on Friday night, saw the Dawgs take an early lead with a two-run homer from outfielder, Jaxon Valcke. The Bulls quickly responded with a run of their own in the second inning, but the Dawgs maintained their lead with a two-run double from infielder, Kody Funderburk.

The Dawgs continued to dominate the game, with strong pitching from starter, Tyler McWillie, who struck out six batters in five innings. The Bulls managed to score two more runs in the sixth inning, but the Dawgs’ bullpen held strong, allowing only one more run in the ninth inning.

The Dawgs’ offense was led by Valcke, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Funderburk, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. The team also showed their speed on the base paths, stealing a total of four bases throughout the game.

Head coach, Mitch Schmidt, was pleased with the team’s performance, stating, “It’s always great to start the season with a win, especially against a tough opponent like the Bulls. Our players showed great determination and teamwork, and I’m confident that we will continue to improve as the season progresses.”

The Dawgs will continue their quest for the WCBL title with a three-game series against the Edmonton Prospects this weekend. Fans can expect to see more exciting plays and strong performances from the team as they strive towards their ultimate goal.
