Manitoba Métis Federation signs historic self-governing treaty with Canada

The Manitoba Metis Federation (MMF) and the Government of Canada have signed a groundbreaking self-governing treaty, marking a significant step towards reconciliation and self-determination for the Metis people.

The historic agreement, signed on December 8, 2021, recognizes the Metis as a distinct Indigenous people with inherent rights, including the right to self-government. It also acknowledges the harms and injustices inflicted upon the Metis people by the Canadian government in the past.

MMF President David Chartrand described the treaty as a “historic moment” for the Metis people, stating that it is a “turning point in our relationship with Canada.” He also emphasized the importance of self-governance for the Metis community, stating that it will allow them to make decisions that directly impact their lives and future.

The treaty includes provisions for the transfer of lands and resources to the MMF, as well as the establishment of a Metis government with the authority to make laws and manage their own affairs. It also includes a financial package of $154.3 million over the next five years to support the implementation of self-government.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was present at the signing ceremony, called the treaty a “historic milestone” and a “concrete step towards reconciliation.” He also acknowledged the long-standing contributions of the Metis people to Canada and committed to working together towards a better future.

The signing of this treaty is a significant achievement for the Metis people, who have been fighting for recognition and self-determination for decades. It is also a testament to the power of collaboration and dialogue in achieving meaningful progress towards reconciliation.

The MMF and the Government of Canada have committed to working together to implement the treaty and ensure the success of self-government for the Metis people. This historic agreement serves as a model for other Indigenous communities in Canada and sets a precedent for future self-governing treaties.

As the Metis people celebrate this milestone, it is a reminder of the ongoing journey towards reconciliation and the importance of recognizing and respecting the rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada.
