A man from Yellowknife has been charged in connection with a fatal assault that occurred outside a hookah lounge in Calgary.
According to Calgary police, the incident took place on December 27, 2020, at approximately 2:30 a.m. outside the Babylon Hookah Lounge on 17 Avenue S.W. The victim, a 26-year-old man, was found unconscious and suffering from serious injuries. He was rushed to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
After an investigation, police have charged 25-year-old Michael Kpogomou with one count of manslaughter. Kpogomou was arrested on January 6, 2021, in Yellowknife and has since been transported to Calgary to face the charge.
The victim has been identified as 26-year-old Mohamed Elmi of Calgary. His family has been notified of his death and is requesting privacy during this difficult time.
Police have not released any further details about the incident, but are asking anyone with information to come forward. They are also reviewing surveillance footage from the area and are urging any witnesses to come forward.
This tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning. The Babylon Hookah Lounge has released a statement expressing their condolences to the victim’s family and friends and stating that they are cooperating with the police investigation.
