Calgary City Council has announced that they will be dividing the duties of Ward 6 after the resignation of Councillor Richard Pootmans. This decision comes after Pootmans announced his resignation on December 14, citing personal reasons.
Ward 6, which covers the southwest area of Calgary, will now be split between two councillors. Councillor Jeff Davison will take on the responsibilities for the western portion of the ward, while Councillor Gian-Carlo Carra will oversee the eastern portion.
According to Mayor Naheed Nenshi, this decision was made in order to ensure that the residents of Ward 6 continue to receive the same level of representation and service. Nenshi also expressed his gratitude to Pootmans for his dedication and service to the community.
Pootmans, who was first elected in 2017, has been a strong advocate for affordable housing and sustainable development in the city. He also served as the chair of the Calgary Planning Commission and the Calgary Housing Company.
In a statement, Pootmans expressed his regret for leaving his position but stated that he needed to prioritize his family and personal well-being. He also thanked his colleagues and the residents of Ward 6 for their support and collaboration during his time in office.
The division of Ward 6 duties will be effective immediately, with Davison and Carra taking on their new responsibilities in the new year. The city council will also be discussing the possibility of holding a by-election to fill Pootmans’ seat in the near future.
This decision by the city council reflects their commitment to ensuring that all wards in Calgary are adequately represented and served. The residents of Ward 6 can rest assured that their needs and concerns will continue to be addressed by their dedicated councillors.
