Kelowna, BC – Students and caregivers in the Okanagan region were given the opportunity to explore careers in the trades at the “Try a Trade” free event.
Hosted by the Industry Training Authority (ITA), the event aimed to introduce students and caregivers to the various trades available and provide them with hands-on experience in different trades.
The event, held at the Kelowna Curling Club, saw a large turnout of over 200 attendees, including students from local high schools and their parents or guardians.
Attendees were able to participate in interactive activities and demonstrations, such as welding, carpentry, and electrical work, to get a feel for what a career in the trades entails.
According to the ITA, the event was designed to showcase the diverse and rewarding career opportunities available in the trades industry. It also aimed to break down stereotypes and misconceptions about trades being a “second choice” career path.
“We want to show students and caregivers that the trades are a viable and fulfilling career option,” said Shelley Gray, CEO of ITA. “There is a high demand for skilled tradespeople in BC, and we want to encourage more young people to consider a career in the trades.”
The event also featured a panel discussion with industry professionals, who shared their personal experiences and success stories in the trades. Attendees were able to ask questions and gain valuable insights into the trades industry.
In addition, the ITA provided information on apprenticeships and the various pathways to becoming a certified tradesperson. They also highlighted the financial benefits of pursuing a career in the trades, such as high earning potential and minimal student debt.
The “Try a Trade” event was well-received by attendees, with many expressing interest in pursuing a career in the trades after experiencing the hands-on activities and hearing from industry professionals.
The ITA hopes that this event will inspire more young people to consider the trades as a viable and rewarding career option. With the growing demand for skilled tradespeople in BC, events like these play a crucial role in promoting the trades industry and bridging the skills gap.
