Kelowna, BC – The city of Kelowna was buzzing with excitement today as it hosted the 13th annual Motionball Marathon of Sport at City Park. The event, which aims to raise funds and awareness for the Special Olympics Canada Foundation, brought together over 1,000 participants and volunteers for a day of fun and friendly competition.
The Motionball Marathon of Sport is a unique event that combines traditional sports with adapted sports, allowing individuals with intellectual disabilities to participate alongside their able-bodied peers. This year, the event featured 12 different sports stations, including basketball, soccer, and even a giant inflatable obstacle course.
Participants were divided into teams and competed in a round-robin style tournament, with each team raising a minimum of $500 to participate. The funds raised will go towards supporting the Special Olympics Canada Foundation, which provides year-round sports training and competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
The event was not only a day of physical activity, but also a celebration of inclusion and acceptance. Participants and volunteers alike were seen cheering each other on and forming new friendships, showcasing the true spirit of the Special Olympics.
Mayor Colin Basran was in attendance and spoke about the importance of events like the Motionball Marathon of Sport in promoting inclusivity and breaking down barriers. “It’s amazing to see the community come together to support such a great cause,” he said. “This event not only raises funds for the Special Olympics, but also raises awareness and promotes a more inclusive society.”
The Motionball Marathon of Sport has become a highly anticipated event in Kelowna, with many returning participants and volunteers year after year. It has also gained recognition on a national level, with events being held in cities across Canada.
As the day came to a close, participants and volunteers gathered for a closing ceremony, where the top fundraising teams and individuals were recognized and awarded. The event raised over $200,000 this year, surpassing its goal of $175,000.
The success of the 13th annual Motionball Marathon of Sport is a testament to the generosity and support of the Kelowna community. It is events like these that truly make a difference in the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities, and promote a more inclusive and accepting society.
