The town of Derry, Maine is no stranger to the supernatural. From killer clowns to shape-shifting monsters, the small town has been the setting for many of Stephen King’s iconic horror stories. And now, it is welcoming another one of his works to the big screen – “The Shining.”
Based on King’s 1977 novel of the same name, “The Shining” has been adapted into a movie twice before, with the most famous version being Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 film starring Jack Nicholson. However, this new adaptation, titled “It: Chapter Two,” will feature a new twist – the town of Derry.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Andy Muschietti revealed that the town of Derry will play a significant role in the movie. “Derry is a character in the movie, and it’s important to bring that aspect of the novel into the movie,” he said.
For those unfamiliar with the story, “The Shining” follows the Torrance family as they move into the isolated Overlook Hotel, where the father, Jack, is hired as the winter caretaker. As the family settles in, they begin to experience supernatural occurrences, and Jack’s sanity starts to unravel.
In “It: Chapter Two,” the town of Derry will serve as a parallel to the Overlook Hotel, with both being places where evil lurks and haunts the characters. Muschietti also hinted that the town’s dark history and connection to the supernatural will be explored in the movie.
The decision to incorporate Derry into the story is a nod to King’s interconnected universe, where many of his stories take place in the same fictional town. This connection has been a source of excitement for fans, who have been eagerly anticipating the release of “It: Chapter Two.”
The movie, which stars James McAvoy, Jessica Chastain, and Bill Skarsgård, is set to hit theaters on September 6. With the addition of Derry, it is sure to bring a new level of terror and intrigue to the already highly-anticipated film.
As fans eagerly await the release of “It: Chapter Two,” the inclusion of Derry in the story is a reminder of the enduring legacy of Stephen King’s works and the impact they continue to have on popular culture.
