Alberta Psychologist Raises Awareness for Birth Trauma during Awareness Week
As Birth Trauma Awareness Week approaches, Alberta psychologist Dr. Sarah Jones is working to shed light on the often overlooked issue of birth trauma and its impact on new mothers.
According to Dr. Jones, birth trauma refers to the psychological distress experienced by women during or after childbirth. This can include feelings of fear, helplessness, and loss of control, as well as physical injuries sustained during delivery.
Despite its prevalence, birth trauma is not often discussed or recognized as a legitimate issue. Dr. Jones believes this is due to societal expectations of motherhood and the pressure for women to have a “perfect” birth experience.
“Many women feel ashamed or guilty for not having a positive birth experience, and this can lead to feelings of isolation and depression,” says Dr. Jones.
In fact, studies have shown that up to 34% of women experience some form of birth trauma, with 9% developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a result. This can have long-lasting effects on a woman’s mental health and her ability to bond with her child.
To address this issue, Dr. Jones is calling for more awareness and support for women who have experienced birth trauma. This includes educating healthcare professionals on how to identify and support women who may be struggling, as well as providing resources and therapy for those who have been affected.
“Birth trauma is a real and valid issue that deserves attention and support,” says Dr. Jones. “By raising awareness and providing proper care, we can help women heal and have a more positive experience with motherhood.”
As Birth Trauma Awareness Week approaches, let us remember to support and validate the experiences of new mothers and work towards creating a more understanding and compassionate society for all women.
