During an interview on MSNBC’s “MSNBC Live with Stephanie Ruhle,” media analyst and former CNN executive Jonathan Klein expressed concern over the subpoena, stating that it could have a chilling effect on journalism. He also pointed out that the Times has a long-standing policy of protecting the identity of their sources.
Klein’s sentiments were echoed by CNN’s chief media correspondent Brian Stelter, who called the subpoena a “dangerous escalation” in the Trump administration’s war on the media. Stelter also noted that the Times has already stated they will fight the subpoena in court.
On the other hand, conservative commentator and former Trump campaign adviser Steve Cortes defended the president’s actions, arguing that the anonymous op-ed writer is a “coward” and that the Times should reveal their identity.
Meanwhile, political figures have also weighed in on the issue. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the subpoena a “brazen assault on the freedom of the press,” while Senator Elizabeth Warren accused Trump of trying to “silence dissent and intimidate the free press.”
The subpoena comes as part of Trump’s ongoing battle with the media, which he has often labeled as “fake news.” The anonymous op-ed, published in the Times in September 2018, described a “resistance” within the Trump administration working to thwart the president’s agenda.
The Times has yet to respond to the subpoena, but their lawyer, David McCraw, has previously stated that the paper will fight any attempts to reveal the identity of the op-ed writer.
