Calgary residents will soon have to adhere to stricter outdoor water restrictions as the city’s water utility crews begin repairs on a new feeder main.
Starting on Monday, July 12, residents will only be allowed to water their lawns and gardens on designated days, based on their address. This is in response to the ongoing repairs on a feeder main that supplies water to the city’s northwest and northeast areas.
The repairs are expected to take up to six weeks to complete, and during this time, the city will be relying on other sources to meet the demand for water. As a result, the city is implementing these restrictions to ensure that there is enough water for essential needs, such as drinking, cooking, and sanitation.
Under the new restrictions, residents with even-numbered addresses can water their lawns and gardens on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays, while those with odd-numbered addresses can do so on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. No outdoor watering will be allowed on Fridays.
In addition, residents are reminded to only water their lawns and gardens between the hours of 5 a.m. and 10 a.m., or 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. This will help reduce water loss due to evaporation during the hottest parts of the day.
The city is also urging residents to be mindful of their water usage and to conserve wherever possible. This includes fixing any leaks, using a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways and sidewalks, and only running dishwashers and washing machines when they are full.
These restrictions are necessary to ensure that the city has enough water to meet the needs of all residents during this repair period. The city is asking for the cooperation of all residents in adhering to these restrictions and conserving water.
