Banff mayor says reducing vehicles necessary after town votes no to pedestrian zone

Banff Mayor Karen Sorensen has expressed her disappointment after the town voted against implementing a pedestrian-only zone in the popular tourist destination.

The proposal, which aimed to reduce vehicle traffic in the downtown area, was rejected by a narrow margin of 4-3 in a council vote on Monday.

In a statement, Mayor Sorensen emphasized the importance of reducing vehicle traffic in Banff, stating that it is necessary for the town’s long-term sustainability and the well-being of its residents and visitors.

She pointed out that the town has been facing increasing traffic congestion and air pollution, which have negative impacts on the environment and the overall visitor experience.

Mayor Sorensen also highlighted the potential economic benefits of a pedestrian-only zone, citing examples from other cities where similar initiatives have successfully boosted local businesses and improved the overall livability of the area.

However, some council members who voted against the proposal expressed concerns about the potential negative impact on local businesses and the inconvenience it may cause for residents and visitors.

Despite the outcome of the vote, Mayor Sorensen remains committed to finding alternative solutions to reduce vehicle traffic in Banff. She stated that the town will continue to explore other options, such as implementing a shuttle service and promoting alternative modes of transportation.

In the meantime, the town will also be conducting a traffic study to gather more data and insights on the issue.

Mayor Sorensen concluded her statement by thanking the community for their engagement and participation in the decision-making process. She encouraged residents and visitors to continue to share their thoughts and ideas on how to make Banff a more sustainable and livable town for all.
