Gusts at Nakiska Ridgetop over 140 km/h early Tuesday, wind warnings issued for southern Alberta

Strong gusts of wind reaching over 140 km/h were recorded at Nakiska Ridgetop early Tuesday morning, prompting wind warnings to be issued for southern Alberta.

According to Environment Canada, the strong winds were caused by a low-pressure system moving through the province. The wind warnings are in effect for areas including Kananaskis, Canmore, and Pincher Creek.

Residents in these areas are advised to take caution as the strong winds can cause damage to buildings, trees, and power lines. Drivers are also urged to be careful on the roads as the gusts can make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

The wind warnings are expected to remain in effect throughout the day, with gusts gradually decreasing in the afternoon and evening.

In addition to the wind warnings, a snowfall warning has also been issued for areas in the Rocky Mountains, including Banff and Jasper. Environment Canada predicts up to 15 cm of snowfall in these areas, which could make for hazardous driving conditions.

The combination of strong winds and heavy snowfall has also led to the closure of several highways in the region, including Highway 1 and Highway 3.

Residents are advised to stay updated on weather conditions and to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. It is recommended to secure any loose objects outside and to avoid unnecessary travel if possible.

Environment Canada will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as needed. For the latest weather warnings and forecasts, visit their website or follow them on social media.

Stay safe and stay informed, southern Alberta.
