The Montreal Canadiens have made a significant addition to their roster, signing defenceman Lane Hutson to a three-year entry-level contract.
Hutson, a 22-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, has been playing for the University of North Dakota for the past four seasons. In his senior year, he recorded 14 points in 28 games and was named to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s All-Academic Team.
Canadiens’ general manager Marc Bergevin expressed his excitement about Hutson joining the team, stating, “We are pleased to have Lane join our organization. He is a skilled and intelligent player who has shown great potential during his time at North Dakota.”
Hutson, who stands at 6’3″ and weighs 205 pounds, is known for his strong defensive skills and physical presence on the ice. He was also a key player in North Dakota’s penalty kill unit, which had a success rate of 86.5% this season.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to play for such a prestigious organization like the Montreal Canadiens,” Hutson said in a statement. “I am looking forward to working hard and contributing to the team’s success.”
Hutson was originally drafted by the Canadiens in the fifth round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. He will join the team’s AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket, for the remainder of the season.
This signing comes at a crucial time for the Canadiens, who are currently battling for a playoff spot in the highly competitive North Division. Hutson’s addition will provide depth and stability to the team’s defensive lineup.
The terms of Hutson’s contract have not been disclosed, but it is expected to have an average annual value of $925,000.
With this signing, the Canadiens have solidified their defensive core and are looking towards a strong finish to the season. Hutson’s arrival is sure to bring a new level of energy and determination to the team as they push for a playoff berth.
