2 people threatened with imitation gun in Downtown Eastside, police say

Two individuals were reportedly threatened with an imitation gun in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, according to police.

The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, near the intersection of East Hastings and Columbia streets. Vancouver Police Department (VPD) officers were called to the scene after receiving reports of a man brandishing what appeared to be a firearm.

Upon arrival, officers located and arrested a suspect who matched the description provided by witnesses. The suspect was found to be in possession of an imitation gun, which was seized by police.

According to VPD spokesperson Const. Tania Visintin, the two victims were not physically harmed during the incident. However, they were understandably shaken by the experience.

The suspect, a 35-year-old man, is facing charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering threats. He is currently in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that can arise in the Downtown Eastside, a neighborhood known for its high levels of poverty and crime. The VPD is urging anyone who witnesses suspicious or threatening behavior to contact them immediately.

In addition, Const. Visintin emphasized the importance of not carrying or displaying imitation weapons in public, as they can easily be mistaken for real firearms and cause unnecessary panic and fear.

The VPD is continuing to investigate this incident and is asking anyone with information to come forward. They can do so by contacting the VPD’s non-emergency line at 604-717-3321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The safety and well-being of all individuals in our community is of utmost importance, and the VPD is committed to ensuring that incidents like this are dealt with swiftly and effectively.
