Trump trial set to hear opening statements Monday as another delay denied

The highly anticipated trial of former US President Donald Trump is set to begin with opening statements from both the prosecution and defense on Tuesday.

Trump is facing charges of inciting the deadly insurrection at the US Capitol on January 6, which resulted in the deaths of five people. He is the first president in US history to be impeached twice, with the House of Representatives voting to impeach him for “incitement of insurrection” on January 13.

The trial will take place in the Senate, with all 100 senators acting as jurors. The proceedings will be presided over by Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

The prosecution, led by House impeachment managers, will argue that Trump’s repeated false claims of election fraud and his speech on January 6, in which he urged his supporters to “fight like hell” and march to the Capitol, directly incited the violent attack.

The defense, led by Trump’s legal team, will argue that the former president’s words were protected by the First Amendment and that he cannot be held responsible for the actions of his supporters.

The trial is expected to last for several days, with both sides presenting their arguments and calling witnesses. A two-thirds majority vote is required for a conviction, which would result in Trump being barred from holding public office in the future.

The trial comes at a time of deep political division in the US, with many Republicans still loyal to Trump and his base of supporters. It also raises questions about the future of the Republican party and the role of the former president in shaping its direction.

As the trial begins, all eyes will be on the Senate as the nation awaits the outcome of this historic event.
