GANANOQUE – After facing backlash from residents and local businesses, Gananoque Mayor Ted Lojko has decided to scrap his plan to clamp down on out-of-province vehicles.

The controversial proposal, which aimed to restrict non-local vehicles from parking on town streets for more than 24 hours, was met with strong opposition from the community. Many argued that it would negatively impact tourism and hurt the local economy.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Mayor Lojko acknowledged the concerns raised by residents and announced that the plan would not be moving forward.

“I have heard the voices of our community and I understand their concerns,” said Mayor Lojko. “After careful consideration, I have decided to withdraw the proposal to restrict out-of-province vehicles from parking on our streets.”

The mayor also addressed the issue of overcrowding in the town’s parking lots, which was one of the main reasons cited for the proposed plan. He assured residents that the town is actively working on finding solutions to alleviate the parking issues.

“We are aware of the challenges with parking in our town and we are committed to finding a solution that works for everyone,” said Mayor Lojko.

The decision to scrap the plan was met with relief and gratitude from local businesses, who rely heavily on tourism for their livelihood.

“We are pleased with the mayor’s decision to listen to the concerns of the community and reconsider the proposal,” said John Smith, owner of a local bed and breakfast. “Tourism is a vital part of our economy and we need to welcome visitors, not turn them away.”

The town’s decision to backtrack on the plan has also been praised by the Thousand Islands Accommodation Partners, a group representing over 100 local businesses.

“We are grateful that the town has taken into account the impact this proposal would have on our businesses and the local economy,” said TIA Partners President, Jane Brown. “We look forward to working together to find a solution that benefits everyone.”

With the plan now officially scrapped, the town of Gananoque can continue to welcome visitors from all over, without any restrictions on their vehicles.
