Smoke blows into Okanagan

Smoke blows into Okanagan

Smoke from wildfires in the surrounding areas has blown into the Okanagan region, causing concern for residents and officials.

According to the BC Wildfire Service, the smoke is coming from the Thomas Creek, White Rock Lake, and Lytton Creek fires, which are all burning in the southern interior of the province.

The smoke has resulted in poor air quality in the Okanagan, with the Air Quality Health Index reaching a level of 10+ in some areas. This is considered a very high risk for individuals, especially those with underlying health conditions.

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy has issued a special air quality statement for the region, advising people to take precautions such as staying indoors and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities.

In addition, the smoke has also caused reduced visibility on highways, leading to warnings from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure for drivers to use caution and turn on their headlights.

The smoke is expected to linger in the Okanagan for the next few days, with the possibility of it clearing out by the end of the week. However, this is dependent on weather conditions and the progress of the wildfires.

Officials are reminding residents to stay informed and follow any evacuation orders or alerts that may be issued in their area. They are also urging people to be mindful of their health and take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the smoke.

The BC Wildfire Service is continuing to work on containing and extinguishing the fires, but the hot and dry weather conditions are making it challenging.

Residents are advised to stay updated on the situation and to report any new wildfires or suspicious activities to the BC Wildfire Service or local authorities.

In the meantime, the Okanagan region will continue to experience smoky conditions, and it is important for everyone to take necessary measures to stay safe and healthy.
