Blood Tribe declares state of emergency after series of dog attacks
The Blood Tribe, a First Nations community in southern Alberta, has declared a state of emergency following a string of dog attacks that have left several people injured.
According to a statement released by the Blood Tribe Chief and Council, there have been at least 10 reported dog attacks in the past month, with the most recent incident occurring on Monday. The attacks have resulted in multiple injuries, including one person being hospitalized with serious injuries.
The statement also noted that the majority of the attacks have been carried out by stray dogs, with some being owned by community members who have failed to properly restrain or control their pets.
In response to the growing concern and danger posed by these attacks, the Blood Tribe has implemented a state of emergency, which gives the Chief and Council the authority to take immediate action to address the issue.
One of the measures being taken is the implementation of a curfew for all dogs on the reserve. From 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., all dogs must be kept indoors or in a secure enclosure. Any dogs found roaming during this time will be impounded and their owners will face fines and potential charges.
The Blood Tribe Animal Control department has also been given additional resources and support to increase patrols and respond to any reports of aggressive or stray dogs.
In addition, the Chief and Council are urging all community members to take responsibility for their pets and ensure they are properly restrained and cared for. They are also reminding residents that it is their legal responsibility to report any dog attacks or aggressive behavior to the authorities.
The Blood Tribe is also working with local animal welfare organizations to address the root causes of the issue, including overpopulation and lack of proper care for animals.
The state of emergency will remain in effect until the situation is deemed to be under control and the safety of community members is no longer at risk.
The Blood Tribe Chief and Council are urging all residents to remain vigilant and report any sightings of aggressive or stray dogs. They are also reminding everyone to take necessary precautions when interacting with dogs, such as avoiding eye contact and remaining calm if approached by an unfamiliar dog.
The safety and well-being of all community members, including their pets, is of utmost importance to the Blood Tribe. The Chief and Council are committed to taking swift and effective action to address this issue and ensure the safety of their community.
