According to FortisBC, there were over 1,200 incidents of damages to underground utility lines in 2020 alone. These incidents not only pose a safety risk but also result in service disruptions and costly repairs. By simply dialing 811 or clicking on the BC One Call website, individuals can easily request for a free underground utility locate before digging.

FortisBC’s Director of Damage Prevention, Doug Stout, emphasizes the importance of taking this simple step before starting any digging activities. He states, “It’s crucial for everyone to understand the potential risks associated with digging without knowing the location of underground utility lines. By dialing or clicking before digging, you can avoid these risks and ensure the safety of yourself and others.”

The process of requesting an underground utility locate is quick and easy. By providing the necessary information such as the location and scope of the project, BC One Call will notify all relevant utility companies to mark the location of their underground lines within three business days. This service is free of charge and can save individuals from potential hazards and costly damages.

FortisBC also reminds residents to always use hand tools when digging within one meter of any marked underground utility lines. This will help prevent any accidental damages and ensure the safety of the individual.
